Lund Northwest Inc. is a small engineering company based in rural Thurston County, Washington. The company is owned and operated by Jake Lund, a licensed professional engineer (PE) with decades of experience in the field. Jake serves as Principal Engineer and project manager on all projects and contracts for Lund Northwest. We feel that all our projects deserve the attention and experience of a senior level engineer at every stage.
Because of the broad technical background and experience of our owner, Lund Northwest can provide land planning, site design, civil engineering, project management, permitting, and construction administration services for public works, municipal park projects, and a wide variety of private residential and commercial development projects. We can manage all phases of your project – from initial concept planning all they way through construction. We specialize in stormwater and drainage designs for all types of projects and properties. 30 years of Civil Engineering, Construction, and Public Works Experience
Jake Lund has been actively working in construction, surveying, engineering, and education since 1996. For over 30 years, Jake has been successful in a wide variety of roles and projects and has experience in nearly every aspect of the industry. The breadth and depth of his experience in both the private and public sectors is rare among practicing engineers.
In August 1996, Jake left a job as a civil construction laborer and pipe fitter for a local construction company and returned to Washington State University in Pullman, WA to finish his engineering degree. During the next three construction seasons (1997-1999), Jake was hired by WSDOT as a construction surveyor out of the Olympic Region construction office in Tumwater, WA. He provided pre-design and construction surveys for projects in the region, including the large Mottman-SR101 to I-5 interchange construction project in 1999. Jake finished his engineering degree at WSU in 1999 and left WSDOT at the end of that same year.
Private Sector Engineering Experience
At beginning of 2000, Jake accepted a design engineer position at a fast growing civil and structural engineering firm in Las Vegas, NV. His design projects there included numerous commercial site developments, public school expansions, and the large casino project known only during design as “Project F” – presumably to protect the identity of the casino image and branding – which would later be revealed as Palms Resort Casino.
From 2001 to 2005, Jake returned to western Washington and worked as civil designer and project manager for multiple private engineering consultants in Bellevue, Olympia, and Chehalis WA. He specialized in stormwater and roadway designs, and managed dozens of private engineering projects in King, Pierce, Thurston and Lewis counties. In 2004, he successfully obtained his Professional Engineer (PE) license from the Washington State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. The following year, he opened his own civil engineering consulting business, Delta Land Design Inc. in Tumwater, WA. Jake provided engineering design, planning, project management, and construction inspection for private residential and commercial land development, utility and stormwater designs, and road design projects under the Delta Land Design name until 2010.
Teaching the Next Generation of Engineers
While still running his first engineering company, Jake had accepted a full-time teaching position at Centralia College in 2007. Jake served as the program head and Associate Professor of the Civil Engineering Technology degree program from 2007 to 2014. He was awarded tenure by the Centralia College Foundation Board of Trustees in 2010, accepted the Foundation’s “Exceptional Faculty Award” in 2011, and the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development – Excellence Award in 2012. Upon receiving tenure at Centralia College, Jake also worked as Division Co-Chair for Professional/Workforce Degree Programs and the College’s Instructional Council for Curriculum Approval for 4 years. He served as primary faculty contact for the CET program advisory committee, program marketing, and student outreach and retention. Jake describes his time at Centralia College as especially rewarding, and he enjoys hearing the many student success stories for graduates of the CET program.
Municipal Engineering & Stormwater Regulations
In 2015, Jake accepted a new position as the Stormwater Engineer for the City of Olympia Public Works Storm & Surface Water Utility. As Stormwater Engineer, He provided technical guidance and direction to the utility, including capital project planning and budgeting, stormwater operations and maintenance support, and utility asset management. Jake held a key role administering the City’s stormwater manual and municipal code for plan review of private engineering and land use permit applications. Jake is also credited as a co-author of the 2016 Drainage Design and Erosion Control Manual (DDECM) for Olympia, and he was instrumental in the introduction of low impact development (LID) requirements and green stormwater best management practices for the utility and private development. Many of the instructional pamphlets and guidance documents he developed during this time in Public Works are still used at the City of Olympia more than a decade later.
Parks and Public Works Project Management
From 2017 until 2024, Jake continued to work for the City of Olympia in the Parks, Arts, & Recreation department as Senior Engineer. He managed the design and construction of all capital and major maintenance projects in the department’s Planning & Design division including supervision of the engineering and project delivery team. Jake’s section delivered over 30 successful public works projects and contracts for the Olympia Parks department in just 7 years. Some notable Olympia Parks projects designed and managed by Jake Lund include the Woodruff Park Sprayground, Woodruff Park Tennis and Pickleball Court renovations, Stevens Field ballfield facility upgrades, downtown Isthmus Park remediation and construction, and Lions Park Sprayground. Many of these projects received grant funding from Washington Recreation and Conservation Office (RCO).
Jake was additionally responsible for the administration of the department’s Capital Asset Management Program and inspection and condition rating for all physical assets in the Olympia park system. At the time, Olympia Parks maintained more than 53 parks and open space properties, totaling more than 1,360 acres, and approximately $70M in City owned facilities and assets. He also coordinated capital projects for the removal of accessibility barriers in the system to address over $3M worth of deficiencies identified in the City’s ADA Transition Plan. Jake managed environmental cleanup efforts at multiple City-owned properties with consultants, provided technical support for the Parks operations and maintenance staff, and coordinated annual inspections and reporting for the Percival Landing Park docks and waterfront assets. In January 2024, Jake left employment with the City of Olympia to take a temporary ‘sabbatical’ from engineering work and focus on personal projects.
Building Lund Northwest
By late 2024, Jake Lund re-established his engineering consulting business in Thurston County under the new name Lund Northwest Inc. With decades of experience in engineering, construction, and project management behind him, Jake started this new company with the simple goal of providing exceptional service and a quality work product.
At Lund Northwest, clients aren’t handed off to junior level staffers or designers. Jake Lund manages and designs all the projects himself. He feels that all projects deserve the attention of a senior level engineer at all phases. Given his background in education and regulatory review, he always finds time to explain project details and design options to his clients in a no-nonsense way.
